Portuguese teams endured mixed fortunes on the opening night of the Champions League as Benfica lost at home to CSKA and Sporting prevailed away at Olympiakos.
Benfica, who are effectively competing along with CSKA and Basel for the right to finish second behind Manchester United in Group A, took the lead through Haris Seferovic’s 50th minute effort but CSKA fought back through Vitinho (63) and Zhamaletdinov (71) to claim all three points at Estadio Da Luz.
Sporting scored thrice in the first half against Greek giants Olympiakos to start their Group D campaign on a winning note. Olympiakos pulled two goals back through Felipe Pardo late in the game but it was to prove nothing more than consolation for the home side.
